Many people may be familiar with electric vehicle pioneer Tesla, however there is a huge ecosystem of lithium-ion battery companies, manufacturers and lithium mining enterprises that are playing critical roles in this transformation of the battery business. At a high level, the industry’s ecosystem starts upstream with lithium metal salt miners that extract the metal from the earth in salt form. The salt raw materials then move into the chemical transformation process to produce the salt lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) or lithium hydroxide (LiOH). Battery companies and producers combine the carbonate or hydroxide salts with materials to form a battery cathode and a battery anode, together giving an individual battery cell. Thousands of individual cells are then combined to create a battery pack for an electric car.
